Contact Lenses on Travel

Some tips if you travel with glasses or lenses

Spare glasses required!

It's better to keep a second pair of glasses in the car, because in some countries spare glasses are mandatory. In France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal, among others, you risk a fine if you cannot provide spare glasses, and this also applies if you wear contact lenses. Sometimes you even have to show spare glasses and a prescription from the ophthalmologist or optician. It is therefore certainly wise to have an eye test done before you travel and to save the prescription digitally. This way you also have the necessary information for the local optician if your glasses break while on holiday.

Don't forget the kids!

Are your children going on holiday with you? Then you would do well to provide them with quality sunglasses with decent UV protection to protect them against permanent eye damage. After all, their eyes are extra sensitive to harmful blue light and UV radiation.

Long car journey ahead?

If you drive at night, night glasses are definitely recommended. Such night glasses filter bright light rays (from the headlights of oncoming traffic, for example). This gives you optimal contrast perception and your eyes get tired less quickly. Polarized glasses are also useful. These stop light reflection (from oncoming traffic, for example) and glare on the road surface (from water and snow, for example). With car glasses with polarized lenses you will have a pleasant and safe drive.

For sporty holidaymakers

If you have an active holiday planned, adapted sports glasses are certainly not an unnecessary luxury. Prescription swimming goggles, for example, or adapted running or cycling goggles that keep sweat droplets out of your eyes when training in warmer places.

Additional travel tips for lens wearers

Traveling with your lenses? No matter how comfortable your contact lenses are at home, they can become an eyesore on holiday. Air conditioning in hotel rooms, chlorine-rich swimming pools, poor water quality and sand are the main causes of dry, itchy and stinging eyes. That's why it's best to take spare glasses with you when traveling so that you can alternate if necessary. However, with these tips you can avoid many contact lens discomforts:

Better not to wear contact lenses on the plane

The dry air and the specific air circulation in the cabin sometimes make traveling with contact lenses very unpleasant. Removing your lenses in the limited space of your seat or the toilet cabin is anything but easy, especially during turbulence.

If you do travel with lenses

Then be sure to put some contact lens solution in your hand luggage. But pay attention to the permitted amount of liquid (100 ml max.) and the packaging instructions! To avoid irritated eyes, it is also best to switch off the ventilation above your seat.

Be careful with lenses on the beach

Nice, those pearly white grains of sand. Until they get between your contact lenses and your eyeball. It is therefore better not to change your lenses on the beach. And definitely wear decent sunglasses!

Isn't that water tempting?

Think before you leap when it comes to water. Chlorine-rich swimming water and salty seawater are a no-go for lens wearers. Unless you use swimming goggles of course. Also think twice before rinsing your lenses with tap water. That is not always pure. Always choose contact lens solution and wash your hands thoroughly before touching your eyes!

Spare glasses and spare lenses!

Take spare glasses and enough spare lenses with you when traveling. Put extra daily lenses and lens solution in your luggage and in your hand luggage. This way you still have a solution if your luggage is lost or stolen and if your lens fluid leaks.

What else is there to see while traveling?

Are you going whale, dolphin or bird watching while traveling and are the landscapes at your destination breathtaking? With high-quality binoculars in hand, you can enjoy them even more!
