From what age do contact lenses start?
A child's eye has already grown by the age of two. However, toddlers are not very careful with hygiene, and that is an important condition for being able to wear contact lenses safely. The right age therefore differs per child. It is important that a child is motivated, can take the lenses in and out themselves and has enough sense of responsibility to adhere to the prescriptions. At Oogwereld we have therefore set the age limit at 8 years, but sometimes it is wise to wait a little longer. Of course, you know your own son or daughter best!
Is it safe for children to wear contact lenses?
Yes. As described above, hygiene and proper performance of the necessary actions are the most important to wear lenses safely. It is necessary that an adult supervises. We also keep an extra eye on things. In the beginning, we like to have young lens wearers come for check-ups more often. Once the child has gotten used to it, we will switch to the 'normal' six-monthly lens check.
When are contact lenses a smart choice for my child?
When a child plays or sports, glasses lenses can break or the frames can bend. It's annoying when a playful romp ends with a trip to the optician. Contact lenses give a child more freedom of movement. Another reason is that some children do not like wearing glasses. Their peers will not see anything from contact lenses. If a child would like to wear lenses themselves, we would always recommend that they seriously look at the options.
Do contact lenses help against myopia (nearsightedness)?
In some cases, contact lenses can indeed help control myopia. They do not remedy the fact that a child has a disadvantage, but they can slow down the increase in this disadvantage. Consider this for example Night lenses.
What are the options for contact lenses for children?
There are countless types of contact lenses today. We treat our young lens wearers no differently than our adult customers when choosing them. This means that we would first like to hear how often and when the lenses will be worn, what the required correction is and what other wishes are. In this way, we determine the very best choice together with parents and child. You and your son or daughter are therefore very welcome for personal advice.
