What is farsightedness?
If you are farsighted, this means that you cannot see clearly up close. The closer an object comes, the more difficult it is to focus on this object. The term farsightedness therefore refers to clearly seeing objects that are far away. Farsightedness is also called hyperopia and is the opposite of myopia. If you are farsighted you have a plus power, for example +2.75, and if you are nearsighted you have a minus power, for example –2.75.
Symptoms of farsightedness
People who are farsighted cannot see close objects clearly. This often manifests itself when focusing on one subject, for example during study or work.
In addition to blurred vision, farsightedness often leads to headaches and eye strain.
What causes farsightedness?
Farsightedness has 2 different causes:
Too short an eye. This means that the distance between the front of the eye (cornea) and the back of the eye (retina) is too small. As a result, the light rays end up behind the retina instead of on it.
A cornea or eye lens that is too flat. Because light rays are not refracted sufficiently, they end up behind the retina instead of on it.
Because the focus of the light rays ends up behind the retina, this leads to blurred vision.
Is farsightedness hereditary?
Farsightedness can be hereditary. However, you often only notice farsightedness as you get older. In general, most people suffer from farsightedness when they approach or reach middle age. Fortunately, there are numerous viewing solutions for people who are farsighted, for example contact lenses, An glasses or a laser treatment.
